*** WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT *** [Apologies for multiple copies of this announcement] ****************************************************** Workshop on Multimodal, Interactive Interfaces for Education https://irecheck.github.io/icmi2023/ Paris, France October 13th, 2023 In conjunction with 25th ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction https://icmi.acm.org/2023/ ****************************************************** AIM AND SCOPE ------------------------------------------------------ From tablets to augmented reality, from virtual avatars, to social robots, multimodal, interactive interfaces emerged as interesting tools to facilitate learning in educational scenarios by improving the engagement and the motivation of students towards the learning activities. Research has also shown the potential of such technologies as convenient instruments for the personalization of teaching strategies to the learning styles of each student, proposing appropriate feedback and adapted levels of difficulty in a wider set of learning activities. Such kind of tailoring might become a new, particularly helpful resource to meet the demands of students with special needs. The development and the adoption of such interfaces in educational scenarios relies on new pedagogies and new didactics co-designed in an interdisciplinary effort involving engineers, psychologists, cognitive scientists, educators, students, and families. The aim of this workshop is to provide a venue for all the involved stakeholders to present scientific advances on the design, the development, and the adoption of multimodal, interactive interfaces for education, fostering discussions, ideas and interdisciplinary collaborations between researchers on the domain as well as industrial partners. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ------------------------------------------------------ The workshop welcomes the submission of short papers (max 4 pages) matching the ACM Conference Template through the EasyChair submission system: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icmi2023miie All contributions will be subject to blind peer review by a minimum of two independent experts in the field. The Program Committee made of academic experts in social interfaces, education, and children with special needs will ensure the acceptance of high-quality contributions. Call for Participation 2023 Summer School on AI Technologies for Trust, Interoperability, Autonomy and Resilience in Industry 4.0 [ [ https://ai4industry2023.sciencesconf.org/ | https://ai4industry2023.sciencesconf.org/ ] ] July 24-28, 2023 − St-Étienne (France), São Paulo (Brazil), and Online We invite PhD students, academics, and researcher staff from academia and industry to apply to the 3rd Summer School on AI Technologies for Trust, Interoperability, Autonomy and Resilience in Industry 4.0 (henceforth AI4Industry). The summer school aims to teach the state of the art of the use of AI technologies and models to tackle the challenges of data revolution and to increase automation of cognitive tasks to develop a trustful and resilient Industry 4.0 (or Industry of the Future). The summer school is organized around concrete industry problems structured as use cases. These use cases aim to stimulate the discussion at the academic institutions toward addressing real-world problems and to showcase innovative solutions to industrial partners. During the summer school, participants attend lectures of AI technologies and carry out practical exercises dedicated to applying these technologies to solve concrete industry problems. The summer school addresses various aspects of AI in Industry with a particular emphasis on * Web of Things * Knowledge Graphs * Multi-Agent Systems * Responsible AI Half of the summer school is dedicated to practical work (through a hackathon) while the other half is meant to introduce the theoretical foundations underlying the hackathon's framework. 2023 Call for Nominations for Silvia Coradeschi and Gerhard K. Kraetzschmar Awards Prof. Silvia Coradeschi (d. Feb 5, 2014) was a founding trustee of RoboCup and an early visionary in the RoboCup initiative. She served as General Chair of RoboCup 1999 in Stockholm, Sweden, was a frequent competition participant, and was an exemplar of the RoboCup ideal of engaging in cutting-edge AI and Robotics research. Prof. Gerhard K. Kraetzschmar (d. July 24, 2019) joined RoboCup since its beginning in 1997 and significantly contributed to the development of the RoboCup Federation (Trustee since 2004, Vice-President from 2008 to 2016). He was involved in the organization of many of the leagues, with major contributions to RoboCupJunior, RoboCup@Home, and RoboCup@Work. He was General Chair of RoboCup 2016 in Leipzig, Germany. To honor their extraordinary contributions to RoboCup and to honor their memories, the RoboCup Federation created “The Silvia Coradeschi RoboCup Award” in 2014 (https://www.robocup.org/silvia_coradeschi <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.robocup.org_silvia…>), for a young female RoboCup student, with distinguishing research and the “Gerhard Kraetzschmar RoboCup Distinguished Service Award” in 2021 (https://www.robocup.org/gkk_award <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.robocup.org_gkk-5F…>), to recognize the outstanding contributions of an individual for his/her exceptional leadership, service, and dedication that benefit RoboCup in any of its leagues. The workshop will be open to a broad audience from academia and industry researching social robotics, machine learning, robot behavioural control, and user-profiling, but also experts from psychology and sociology insights and experiences from a multidisciplinary and human-focused point of view. Dear roboticists and AI researchers, we are pleased to present the call for expressions of interest in the Robot Exhibition of the 32nd International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (August 19–25, 2023, Macao, S.A.R). IJCAI23 will be a premier international gathering of researchers in AI, and the Robot Exhibition will run alongside the IJCAI23 combined technical program (https://ijcai-23.org/call-for-robot-exhibition/). Robots are a central focus of AI research and development, providing preeminent examples where cognitive skills (e.g., in perception, decision-making, control) are necessary to cope with complex tasks, and both naturalistic and controlled environments. On the one hand, developing intelligent robot systems involves challenging open research questions in AI. On the other hand, established AI methods are gaining increasing interest and applicability in various domains (e.g., industries, services, space) that involve robots alongside humans. This exhibition offers a prime space for exhibiting both achieved results and new opportunities for the development and use of AI in Robotics in the real world to a large audience of professional AI researchers from academia and industry. The exhibition seeks to involve both academic and industrial groups interested in the combination of AI and Robotics. The exhibition will thus provide an outstanding opportunity for universities, research organizations, and companies to showcase their research on the world stage. Dear organizers of the RobocupRescue International, My name is Jesús Guadalupe Herrera Vanoye and I am writing to you on behalf of our robotics team, Medio Metro. Recently, we won first place in the RoboRescue Major category at the Mexican Robocup Open, which has given us the opportunity to represent our country at the international event. We would like to express our interest in participating in the RobocupRescue International in France and we are excited about the idea of competing with other teams from around the world in this exciting challenge. We are also grateful for the support we have received from our city, which has encouraged us to take this opportunity to showcase our passion and skills in the field of robotics. We would like to know what steps we need to take to register for the competition and ensure that we meet all the necessary requirements. The challenge will take place both in the simulated BARN dataset and in physical obstacle courses at ICRA2023. 1. The competition task is designing ground navigation systems to navigate through all 300 BARN environments (https://cs.gmu.edu/~xiao/Research/BARN/BARN.html) and physical obstacle courses constructed at ICRA2023 as fast as possible without collision. 2. The 300 BARN environments can be the training set for learning-based methods, or to design classical approaches in. During the simulation competition, we will generate another 50 unseen environments unavailable to the participants before the competition. 3. We will standardize a Jackal robot in the Gazebo simulation, including a Hokuyo 2D LiDAR, motor controller of 2m/s max speed, etc. 4. Participants can use any approaches to tackle the navigation problem, such as using classical sampling-based or optimization-based planners, end-to-end learning, or hybrid approaches. We will provide baselines for reference. 5. A standardized scoring system is provided on the website. 6. We will invite the top teams in simulation to compete in the real world. The team who achieves the fastest collision-free navigation in the physical obstacle courses wins. [news] Announcing Verti-Wheelers: Toward Wheeled Mobility on Vertically Challenging Terrain

Dear roboticists, the Verti-Wheelers project developed at the RobotiXX lab at George Mason University is officially open-sourced and public to the whole robotics community! In this project, we developed platforms, datasets, and algorithms to empower conventional wheeled robot platforms to move through off-road terrain with vertical protrusions from the ground, such as steep slopes, rocky outcroppings, and uneven surfaces. Without specialized hardware, the Verti-Wheelers project encourages the community to develop enhanced wheeled mobility on such vertically challenging terrain together. The build of our Verti-Wheelers (both hardware and software), hours of demonstrated crawling datasets, and three baseline algorithms are all open-sourced for the community’s use. With the Verti-Wheelers, we look forward to superior robot mobility that allows mobile robots to venture to many difficult spaces which are previously inaccessible to wheeled robots. Research has also shown the potential of such technologies as convenient instruments for the personalization of teaching strategies to the learning styles of each student, proposing appropriate feedback and adapted levels of difficulty in a wider set of learning activities. Such kind of tailoring might become a new, particularly helpful resource to meet the demands of students with special needs. The development and the adoption of such interfaces in educational scenarios relies on new pedagogies and new didactics co-designed in an interdisciplinary effort involving engineers, psychologists, cognitive scientists, educators, students, and families. Final Call for Participation: RoboCup Autonomous Robot Manipulation (ARM) Challenge The RoboCup ARM Challenge will be hosted again for the 2023 RoboCup season and registrations are still open. This year the finalists will have a chance to attend the RoboCup finals in Bordeaux, France to program a real Franka Emika robot as they compete for several prizes and learning certificates. Submissions are due May 22nd 2023. The challenge is centered around autonomous robot manipulation and grasping and organized in two phases: 1) On-line for submitting solutions that will be tested in a dynamic simulated scenario 2) During RoboCup 2023 in Bordeaux for the best teams to run the task in a real scenario.
