by Alessandra Rossi 29 Sep '26

29 Sep '26

Dear colleagues, We would like to invite you to submit your works at the special issue on "Towards Ethical Deception in HRI" in International Journal of Social Robotics <https://link.springer.com/journal/12369> whose submission deadline is 19 December 2026. The special issue explores the design and ethical implications of robot deception in human–robot interaction, emphasising autonomy, well-being, and the protection of vulnerable populations. Read below further information, and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Kind regards, Alessandra Rossi Alessandra Rossi, PhD Assistant Professor Fellow of the Higher Education Academy Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies - D.I.E.T.I. University of Naples Federico II Via Claudio, 21, 80125 - Naples, Italy w-page: https://alessandrarossi.net e-mail address: alessandra.rossi(a)unina.it e-mail address: a.rossi(a)herts.ac.uk X: @alhandra81 [image: image.png] This Topical Collection focuses on deception in human-robot interaction and its ethical implications. In particular, robot deception is a complex yet potentially beneficial strategy. Intentional behaviours such as white lies or deliberate errors can foster trust, reduce distress, and improve therapeutic or educational outcomes. Robots may strategically omit information to maintain psychological stability or simulate imperfections to appear more relatable. While deception in human–robot interaction remains ethically controversial, its applications can enhance empathy, engagement, and learning. Ultimately, the capacity for controlled, prosocial deception highlights the need to reconsider moral frameworks governing social robotics, emphasizing the potential for nuanced, emotionally adaptive interactions. This collection aims at exploring a design-centred and ethical-centred development of robotic deceptive behaviours for a successful human-robot interaction that, at the same time, is ethically acceptable and respect the autonomy and well-being of population, specially vulnerable individuals such as older people, patients and children. This Topical Collection is open to a broad audience from academia and industry researching social robotics, robot ethics, cognitive science, psychology, and philosophy of technology. It aims to attract an interdisciplinary audience that includes academics, industry researchers, designers, and policy-makers interested in exploring the integration of deceptive techniques in designed-centred and ethics-centred HRI. By collecting works addressing disciplinary and methodological boundaries, this collection seeks to promote a shared understanding of how social robots might responsibly employ complex behavioural strategies in human-centred contexts, such as education, healthcare and service. *Submission guidelines* All papers must be prepared in accordance with the Submission Guidelines. Articles for this Topical Collection should be submitted via our submission system, Editorial Manager <https://www.editorialmanager.com/soro/default.aspx>. During the submission process you will be asked whether you are submitting to a Collection, please select "*Towards Ethical Deception in HRI*" from the dropdown menu. Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the Topical Collection. All papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation by at least two reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editors-in-Chief.

[AAMAS 2027] Calls for Tutorials
by Radulescu, R.T. (Roxana) 23 Sep '26

23 Sep '26

AAMAS 2027: Calls for Tutorials The 26th International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems The AAMAS 2027 Organizing Committee invites proposals for the Tutorial Program, to be held on May 3-4, 2027, immediately before the main conference in Hanoi, Vietnam. Tutorials should serve one or more of the following objectives: * Introduce novices to major topics of AAMAS research. * Provide instruction in established practices and methodologies. * Survey a mature area of AAMAS research or practice. * Motivate and explain an AAMAS topic of emerging importance. * Introduce expert non-specialists to an AAMAS area. * Survey an area of agent research especially relevant for people from industry. * Present a novel synthesis combining distinct lines of AAMAS work. * Introduce AAMAS audiences to an external topic that can motivate, use, or be useful to AAMAS research. Special Focus: This year, we particularly encourage proposals that (a) discuss agentic AI systems, especially in ways that connect them to core AAMAS themes, (b) build new bridges between different (sub)-communities, for example by introducing to one community methods or problem settings that have traditionally been part of a different community, or (c) are designed to be interactive, going beyond a standard lecture format, e.g., by devoting substantial time to discussion, exchange, or hands-on activities. Accessibility for Students and Newcomers: We encourage tutorial proposers to design their tutorials so that they are accessible and engaging for students and other attendees who are new to the topic. Depending on the tutorial, this may include introducing the necessary background during the tutorial, providing preparatory material in advance, making extensive use of illustrative examples, including hands-on exercises, or reserving time for questions and discussion. Areas of interest include all of those listed in the Call for Main Track<https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/dcs/aamas2027/calls/call-for-main-track/>. Tutorials will be half-day long and will be in person — online/remote versions will not be accepted. A small number of full-day tutorials may be considered, but proposers must justify this request in their submission. Important Dates * Proposal Submission: December 10, 2026 * Organizer Notifications: December 30, 2026 * Tutorial site Available on the Web: February 10, 2027 * Tutorials: May 3-4, 2027 All deadlines are at the end of the specified day, Anywhere on Earth (UTC-12). Conference Dates * Tutorials, Doctoral Consortium, Workshops: May 3-4, 2027 * Main Conference: May 3-7, 2027 Submission Requirement Each proposal must include a single tutorial proposal file in PDF format. The proposal should be 2 to 4 pages in length, formatted using the AAMAS paper template (available here<https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/dcs/aamas2027/guidelines-and-policies/instruc…>), and should contain a title, a brief description, a detailed outline, resume of the presenters and additional information. See the full call on the AAMAS website for the submission link and requirements: https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/dcs/aamas2027/calls/call-for-tutorials/ The evaluation of the proposal will consider the level of general interest for AAMAS attendees, the quality of the proposal, the feasibility of running it in the proposed mode, the expertise and skills of the presenters, and recent tutorials on the same or related topics at AAMAS. We emphasize that the primary criteria for evaluation will be whether a proposal is interesting, well-structured, and motivated, rather than the perceived experience/standing of the proposer. The overall goal in the selection process is to compose a balanced program of excellent tutorials. Thus, even good proposals might be rejected. In the case of several closely related proposals, the tutorial chairs may ask the authors to merge them into a single tutorial. AAMAS will provide the logistics for accepted tutorials, whereas tutorial organizers would be responsible to create and maintain a dedicated website (see full call), to register and presen the tutorial in person. AAMAS reserves the right to cancel any tutorial if the above responsibilities are not fulfilled, if deadlines are missed, or if too few attendees register for the tutorial to support the costs of running the tutorial. Submissions and Inquiries Inquiries should be sent to niclas.boehmer(a)hpi.de and minming.li(a)cityu.edu.hk, with the subject line prefixed by “[AAMAS’27 Tutorials]”. If the submission via the submission form<https://forms.gle/QJf87Wt6awVs1p9P7> does not work for you, feel free to send the proposal to our email addresses instead.
