As it was discussed during last RoboCup, we will attempt to merge the rule book for the virtual competition and the regular Humanoid Soccer Competition back together. In addition, there are some further updates planned that were discussed during last RoboCup and the previous year. We are currently in the stage of compiling a list of open topics for discussion and plan to open the discussion period in the Discours forum by December 23rd. You will then have time until January 21st to discuss the topics or bring up new topics for discussion, after which we will compile the different proposals into a vote to send to the league in February. Humanoid League - Virtual Season --------------------------------- Signing up for the virtual season ends today! So if you haven't already signed up in the submission system, don't forget to do it before midnight anywhere on earth today. If you have already signed up but did not pay the participation fee yet, I would also kindly remind you to do so as soon as possible. We have also noticed that we did not give teams a possibility to upload their robot models yet - we will get in touch with the team leaders today and let them know how they can upload their robot models, so stay tuned for that e-mail. If you are not registered for the league but still want to watch the streams we will have every other weekend, then watch out for the announcement of the streaming schedule. After we have gotten all applications we will put together a stream plan and let you know when the streams will happen. Dear Humanoid League Teams, In this November Newsletter, I will cover news around the RoboCup world championship in Thailand in 2022, the Humanoid League - Virtual Season development and the ongoing preparations for it. RoboCup World Championship 2022 ------------------------------- The Trustees have recently announced that next year's RoboCup competition is planned as an in-person event in *Bangkok, Thailand, from July 11th to 17th*. We know that we are still in uncertain times when it comes to Covid and that many of you may be worried about travel restrictions and quarantine rules still in place next summer and while we are prepared to switch to a hybrid or online event if necessary, at the moment, the Federation is determined to organize an in-person event if at all possible. We are currently finalizing the Call for Participation, which will be sent out within the next few days. The preliminary *application deadline is December 12th, 2021*, with a peer-review period for teams following shortly after. So please plan accordingly to make sure you can submit your own application material and your peer review in time. More information will follow as soon as possible. If your team or your company has a special hardware offer for teams participating in the RoboCup Humanoid League, you can send your proposal for a special offer to the Technical Committee until the end of November. You can find further instructions on what to include in the Call for Special Offers that was sent out today. Humanoid League - Virtual Season --------------------------------- As you can see, the virtual tournament that we plan to start in December has a new name - thanks to everyone who participated in the Discord poll! Our proposal is currently under review by the Trustees, and we are hoping to get their final approval within the next days. As soon as we have their endorsement, we will send out a Call for Participation. According to the current time plan, we have the first games scheduled for the last weekend before the Christmas break (December 17th / 18th) and the deadline for teams to register at the end of November. Note that there will not be a formal qualification process, and all interested teams will be able to participate. We still need your help! ------------------------- We are very grateful that so many of you showed up in the meetings to help us with organizing the Humanoid League - Virtual Season, improve the AutoReferee and the simulated environment, as well as the competition infrastructure. However, there is still a lot to do, so if you or anyone in your team has a bit of time, we are still looking for people to contribute, especially in improving the software stack. A special offer is limited in time and enables teams and institutes participating in RoboCup 2022 to buy a hardware product used for the RoboCup 2022 competition for a reduced price or under other special conditions. Hardware products can either be complete robot platforms or relevant hardware parts needed for robot construction. The organisers will be Associate Editors (AE) for the proposed session, and they will be responsible for assigning reviewers and judging the submitted paper for the special session. In particular, it is expected that a robot deployed in human populated environments not only needs to be able to successfully complete a task, involving perception, reasoning and decision-making of other agents and the surroundings, but also needs to show social intelligence to engage people in effective and natural interactions. In such interactions, robots and people need to be able to cooperate to reach a joint goal, which can only be achieved if people accept and trust robots to complete their task and prevent any potential harm (emotional or physical) to people, the environment and themselves. The agents involved need to correctly interpret each other's behaviour, and act accordingly. Finally, several studies have shown that socially aware robots are perceived more positively by people in social contexts and situations. Robots, therefore, should be able to understand and use people's direct and indirect modes of communication, such as verbal and non-verbal cues. Moreover, robots should be able to adapt their behaviours to satisfy people's needs (such as personality, emotions, preferences, habits), and incorporating reactive and predictive meta-cognition models to reason about the situational context (such as its own erroneous behaviours) and provide socially acceptable behaviours. This special issue will explore successful HRI from a multidisciplinary perspective and shape the design of robots, so that robots: 1) autonomously sense and react to the situation, people and the environment by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) techniques 2) such that people feel comfortable to interact with robots 3) and trust them to safely reach intended outcomes, and 4) by respecting ethical and legal principles. vRoHOW 2021 - save the date

This year's vRoHOW will have the same goals as every year: Exchanging knowledge in workshops and discussions, expanding your horizon in talks, and chatting together with a cold beer or soft drink. Discord will be our venue with multiple rooms and areas prepared. Combined with additional tools and your participation we will bring the virtual RoHOW to life. Sounds good? There will be no participation fee! A detailed "Call for participation" will follow in the near future. As we currently are in a creative and early planning stage, we encourage you to send us ideas, feedback or any other vRoHOW related input. RoboCup Humanoid League Newsletter - October 2021

Dear Humanoid League Teams, The newly elected Technical Committee of the Humanoid League had their first meeting two weeks ago and as part of this, we decided to keep the newsletters that we introduced last spring to keep you updated about the developments in the league and organization of the upcoming tournament(s). For now, we will send the newsletter on a monthly basis. Call for Participation and Submission Process for RoboCup HL 2022 ----------------------------------------------------------------- In the past years, we have sent out the first call for participation at the beginning of October. This year, however, we are still waiting for some details about the next RoboCup competition to be confirmed, which is why the first Call for Participation will be sent out a little later this year. But don’t worry, there will be a RoboCup Humanoid League 2022 competition in one way or the other for sure! At the moment, we are hoping to follow a similar timeline to the previous years, which would entail the initial submission deadline for teams in December and a notification of acceptance or a request for further material in January. The final submission of the updated material is planned for February. The Technical Committee does not foresee any changes in the submission procedure to the 2020 Calls for Participation, so please have a look at them for further information [0][1]. Future of the Virtual Humanoid Soccer Competition ------------------------------------------------- After the great success of the virtual soccer competition during the last world championship, we would like to use the opportunities the Webots simulator and the AWS infrastructure give us to keep the Humanoid League community connected throughout the year as well. At the moment, we are working towards setting up a virtual champions league with 10 games for every team played over a period of five months. Details and the exact start date are still depending on further logistical investigations, but at the moment we are considering a start at the beginning of December. The rule book will be similar to the one used in the last virtual tournament. However, we aim to have more variability in the virtual environment, e.g., by adding variation to the light source and ball texture. More information and a call of participation will be shared as soon as possible! We need you! Help for Virtual Humanoid Soccer Competition Needed ---------------------------------------------------------------- While we are committed to organize a virtual champions league and improve the virtual environment and AutoReferee system, we can’t do this alone. As the main responsibility of the Technical Committee is the organization of the next world championship, the application process as well as the rule and roadmap development, we need support with the virtual league. In particular, there are three projects that support is needed for: (i) AutoReferee and Simulator development: Apart from fixing remaining bugs and inconsistencies in the AutoReferee, this project also entails optimizing parts of the code and working on future extensions, like domain randomization. (ii) Competition Infrastructure: To run the virtual tournament, a large number of bash and python scripts were developed last spring. The aim of this project is to make the existing scripts more uniform and robust and simplify the setup and execution of the virtual tournament. (iii) Organization: Running a virtual champions league does not only require the technical infrastructure to be in place, there is also a number of tasks around scheduling, streaming, commentating, communication with teams, and making the results available. If you are interested to join any of the project teams, please get in touch with Jasper (e-mail: jasper(a)bit-bots.de or Discord: Bitbots_Jasper#5358). The first meetings will be scheduled in week 42/43, so please get in touch before October 11th if possible. You are, of course, welcome to join any of the groups later as well, but to get the virtual champions league started we will need helping hands as early as possible. Registrations are now open for teams from all over the world. All the categories have been adapted and will happen in a fully remote format, using simulators, challenges and submission of articles written by the teams. Our goal is to disseminate the studies and technologies developed by universities in the field of robotics and IA.
