Dear RoboCuppers, The Humanoid League is organising the event "Open Humanoid Competition" as part of the Symposium Satellite Events on 14 July 2022, 19:00-21:00 (local time) Bangkok, Thailand. This satellite event is meant to be a discussion group during which we will foster discussions between members of different Leagues, trustees, members of the Technical and Organising Committees to tackle some fundamental requirements to facilitate new teams to join or participate in the games of the Humanoid League. Best regards, Alessandra on behalf of the Humanoid League TCs *Abstract*: "Since the Humanoid League's first games in 2002, the competitions progressively developed its scientific challenges to successfully meet the goal of RoboCup to play against the human world soccer champion in 2050. Such increasing scientific difficulties have been catching the attention and interest of researchers, but, at the same time, make it prohibitive for new and, in consequence, often less experienced teams to join the Humanoid League. The main difficulties faced by new teams are related both to the cost of taller robots, and the challenges of developing hardware and software for such taller robots. We also expect that such costs for research, components and equipment for one or a full team of humanoid robots may soon become inapproachable for new teams. For these reasons, in this satellite event for the 25th RoboCup International Symposium, we want to focus on addressing the challenges and development of the creation an initial process or a sub-event to the Humanoid League main competition that can ease the path for new teams and to guide them towards a final full participation. This year, we are inviting the submission of poster proposals to facilitate scientific discussions about ongoing projects and late-breaking results during the RoboCup 2022 Symposium. This call is specifically for poster presentations to showcase teams’ ongoing work and/or the latest results relevant to the RoboCup community. The Symposium Program Co-Chairs would like to promote exciting conversations during the coffee break over posters, discussing scientific results, finding other research groups with similar interests, and strengthening connections between different teams as well as RoboCup leagues. Any team, research group, or individual is welcome to propose a poster presentation with the content relevant to the RoboCup community. To ensure this and to group posters into the poster sessions, we ask everyone interested in such poster presentations to submit a proposal with the title and short abstract of max 250 words by June 20th (using the Research Showcase Track). Dear Humanoid League Teams, this is the May version of our monthly newsletter in which we will give you some updates on changes to the rules and the ongoing discussion about the Humanoid League RoadMap. We are also providing a link to the recordings of the Humanoid League - Virtual Season and to sign up for the Humanoid Robot Soccer School to be held hybrid later in May. As always, you will find all details below. Rule book update - CoM & Parcour Device ---------------------------------------- As announced in our last newsletter, the Technical Committee voted to include the measurement device for the robot's center of mass in the official rule book. It is now clarified that the center of mass is determined using the device provided in the Appendix. The Appendix contains instructions that both LOCs and teams can use to build the device that was used during the last official RoboCup Humanoid competitions. The changes are already published in the latest version of the rules on the website: http://humanoid.robocup.org/wp-content/uploads/RC-HL-2022-Rules-Changes-Mar… In the last meeting, the Technical Committee has decided to also make a technical drawing of the parkour device part of the rule book. Hence, we will have another update of the rule book containing this device soon. Please note that this is again not a change of the rules but rather a clarification that will make it easier for teams to prepare for the upcoming competition. RoadMap Update -------------- This is a reminder that we are currently in the discussion period about the latest draft of the roadmap. It can be found here: http://humanoid.robocup.org/wp-content/uploads/roadmap_2022.pdf During the discussion period, we welcome all requests for additions or changes and will consider them carefully in the Technical Committee. The discussion is still open until May 15th. Afterwards, we plan vote to approve the RoadMap in the beginning of June. Dear Humanoid League Teams, this is the April version of our monthly newsletter in which we will give you some updates on the preparation for the RoboCup 2022 world championship, another upcoming change to the 2022 rule book as well as updates to the RoadMap. We also have a number of upcoming events, such as the HL-VS semifinals and finals, the HL-VS Workshops, the Humanoid Soccer Robot School and the Amazon re:Mars event. You will find all details below. Upcoming Rule Book Update & Final Release ----------------------------------------- The Technical Committee has voted to release the final version of the rule book. It can be found here: https://humanoid.robocup.org/materials/rules/ In its last meeting, however, the Technical Committee has voted unanimously to add a clarification to the rule book regarding the measure of the robot's center of mass (H_com). We will clarify in the rules what device will be used to measure H_com and how teams can build such a device. The device will be the same as used during the last years of RoboCup world championship tournaments. We are working on the changes at the moment and expect to release the updated version next week. Please note that this is not a change of rules but rather a clarification to avoid confusion during the robot inspections at the world championship. RoadMap Update -------------- We have updated the RoadMap to account for the new changes introduced in 2022, as well as the changes foreseen for 2023. You can find the latest version here: http://humanoid.robocup.org/wp-content/uploads/roadmap_2022.pdf Please note that for the 2022 competition, we are counting all changes as new that were decided between the last physical competition in 2019 and today as the rule changes of 2020 and 2021 have never been applied to a physical competition. We are also aiming to get the draft of the rule book approved by the league and trustees before the next RoboCup competition. The RoadMap is supposed to be a living document and as such it will undergo updates every year. However, we would like to have a base version of the RoadMap approved so that we can only vote on updates in the coming years (as we are currently doing with the rules). If you have any comments or topics for discussion to share about the current state of the RoadMap, please share them in our forum until *May 15th*: https://hl.forum.robocup.org/t/discussion-updates-to-the-roadmap-document/5… We will send around a survey for the approval process in the end of May after all final comments have been included. World Championship in Bangkok - Registration & Visa --------------------------------------------------- The registration process for the 2022 competition in Bangkok, Thailand, has started and all qualified teams should have received a letter with further instructions on how to register. Please observe that the early registration deadline closes May 15th and the final deadline for registering a new team ends June 12th. So make sure you complete your team registration on time! We would also like to remind all teams to check whether they require a Visa to travel to Thailand and if so get started on the visa process as soon as possible. World Championship in Bangkok - Environment & Balls --------------------------------------------------- The competition in Bangkok will be held in the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre: https://www.bitec.co.th/th We already know that the BITEC will not have a space with natural light available for the competition, so all fields will be placed in areas with artificial light. The Technical Committee has also voted during its last meeting to have not only one but several different balls available during the competition and the referees will randomly draw a ball to play with before each game. We are still looking into the exact balls to buy and will make images available once the balls to be purchased have been confirmed. Humanoid League Virtual Competition - Finals --------------------------------------------- This Sunday, we will be streaming the semifinals and final of the 2022 Humanoid Soccer Virtual Season! We have very exciting matches coming up and hope many will join us for this very last streaming day. The exact streaming times are still under discussion as we will be streaming live from the German Open Replacement Event in conjunction with the SPL. The final streaming plan will be announced by e-mail and on our website in the coming days. Humanoid League Virtual Competition - Workshops ----------------------------------------------- On April 28-30 we will have a three-day event to conclude the Humanoid League Virtual Season, focused on sim2real transfer. The workshops are open to any interested RoboCupper, no matter whether you participated in the virtual season or not. We will provide a full schedule asap. The workshops are supposed to be interactive and teams are still welcome to propose a discussion group, tutorials or other interactive activities. Each activity should be of half hour. The deadline for the proposals submission is April 17. We know that this event is very close to the RoboCup world championship and it may hence be difficult for teams to participate.
