Updates on rules changes for RoboCup 2022

Dear SPL Teams, The TC is in the process of determining the rules for the 2022 competition. We’d like to keep the league up-to-date on decision that have been made, which may help teams plan and prepare for 2022. In-Person RoboCup 2022 At this stage, the TC is proceeding under the presumption that RC2022 will be held in-person, as scheduled in Thailand. If this changes, we’ll keep the league informed. Structure of the Competition RC2022 will return to a classic SPL competition structure, featuring: * Main Competition * Champions Cup (12 teams) * Challenge Shield (12 teams) * 7 vs 7 competition: * A 7 vs 7 competition (7 players per side) will replace the mixed-team competition * Follows standard rules (with minor modifications for 7 players) * Some robots may be drawn from a pool of available robots to facilitate teams participating in the competition * Technical Challenges * The TC are considering a variety of technical challenges, and have narrowed down the possibilities to: * Visual Referee Challenge: robots will have to recognise some visual signal(s) from the referee. * Ball Handling Challenge: details to be confirmed, but triangle or give-and-go passing between robots in a game-like situation could be an example * Video Analysis / Game Statistics Challenge: detect game actions (e.g. ball touches, passes, time under control) from the sideline elevated go-pro type camera viewpoint Separation of Championship Cup and Challenge Shield The TC is also considering “separating” the Championship Cup and Challenge Shield for an individual year, so that teams would not move between the two leagues within the same competition. We have gathered responses from Challenge Shield teams and are considering whether to proceed on this change. Rules Changes At this time, the TC believe that many teams are still implementing the rules changes originally intended for the 2020/2021 competitions. Thus, the TC are not planning of significant rules changes for the main competition. The only significant rules changes are: * Limitation to Event-based communication (limited messages per game instead of limited messages per second). * Continuation of standardising the game set-up and execution procedures from last year. vRoHOW 2021 - Save the date

Dear fellow RoboCup teams, We are proud to announce the next virtual Robotic Hamburg Open Workshop (vRoHOW) 2021. The event will take place from 3rd to 5th of December. This year's vRoHOW will have the same goals as every year: Exchanging knowledge in workshops and discussions, expanding your horizon in talks, and chatting together with a cold beer or soft drink. Discord will be our venue with multiple rooms and areas prepared. Combined with additional tools and your participation we will bring the virtual RoHOW to life. Sounds good? There will be no participation fee! A detailed "Call for participation" will follow in the near future. As we currently are in a creative and early planning stage, we encourage you to send us ideas, feedback or any other vRoHOW related input. Feedback on potential rule change(s) separating Challenge Shield and Champions Cup

Dear SPL Teams, For the attention of teams who participate in the RoboCup Challenge Shield. One of the proposals that the TC is considering is having a separation in rules between the Champions Cup and the Challenge Shield. The purpose of this is to allow the top teams to be sufficiently challenged by rule changes without forcing every team to make the same rate of progress. The implications of this change are as follows: * Teams would not be able to move between the Challenge Shield and Champions Cup at a single RoboCup event. * This would permit the rule set for the Challenge Shield to be a subset of the the Champions Cup rules within the same year. * Between years if a team was “promoted" from the Challenge Shield to the Champions Cup, they would need some extra effort to step up to the rule set of the Champions Cup. * Possible real differences include: * Different number of robots on each team such as 5v5 in the challenger league and 7v7 in the championship league. * New rules changes might start in the Champions Cup and then be rolled out to the Challenge Shield in later years. We would like the feedback of the Challenge Shield teams (who had limited representation at RoboCup 2021 team leader meetings) on potential change to see if this would be a change that they would support. Please respond by reply to this email by September 5th if with your comments and feedback on this change and if your team supports a split in the rules between the two leagues within a given year.
